Founded in 1878, over 7,000 people are placed in the cemetery's care. Famous and influential leaders such as Grant Marsh, Alexander McKenzie and numerous priests and bishops from the Diocese are buried here.

St. Mary's Cemetery serves people of all faiths and is the primary cemetery for the Catholic Diocese of Bismarck. Two-thirds of the burials are Catholics. However, St. Mary's Cemetery is open to people of all faiths.

St. Mary's Cemetery Policy

For purposes of safety and proper maintenance of the cemetery, effective July 15, 2010, we will adhere strictly to the following policy:

Planting of trees, shrubs and flowers including hanging baskets, urns, vases, or flower boxes will not be permitted in or around monuments. Cut flowers may be placed in vases which are an integral part of the monument base. Trees, shrubs and flowers may only be planted in landscaped areas designated and approved by the Cemetery Management as part of its overall landscape program. All items that are not an integral part of the monument base and cannot be attached to the monument base (wreaths, shepherd hooks, lights, plants, stuffed animals, flags, and the like) are not allowed and will be removed by cemetery personnel.
