Leadership Program

Sharing Principles
Students in grades 1-8 regularly present "Habits of Servant Leaders" to various groups. Here, first graders share their understanding of being proactive.
Servant-Leadership Program

Servant-leadership skills for the students at St. Mary's Grade School are one of five key areas on which the school is based. The goal of the program is to provide students with opportunities to exercise skills in leading others, and working with and in teams. In addition, we build ethical servant leaders for the future.

Since 2005, children at St. Mary's Grade School have learned many important lessons about life, leadership, and service. For instance, a 2008 student survey revealed 95% were able to demonstrate a "very strong understanding of the fundamental meaning of servant leadership."

The Servant-Leadership Program challenges students, staff and parents to practice leadership through service to others. Outlined below, the regular leader visits, student speakers' team, classroom leaders, leader of the month (grades 6-8), and service learning opportunities are an integral part of the school curriculum.

An active Servant-Leadership Committee comprised of parents, staff and community members meets monthly during the school year to coordinate activities and ensure the program's ongoing success. Contact Principal Tony Fladeland tony.fladeland@sendit.nodak.edu if you are interested in the Servant-Leadership Committee.

Fr. Shea and Leader Visits
University of Mary President Fr. James Shea visited with students at St. Mary's Grade School last fall to share his thoughts on servant leadership.
Servant-Leadership Activities

The Servant-Leader Program at St. Mary's Grade School delivers five primary activities for students during the school year. They include:

1. Leader Visits: St. Mary's offers two avenues for interaction between students and recognized leaders. First, individuals who have a compelling story of servant leadership are invited to the school to visit with students about their experience. For example, Fr. James Shea, president of the University of Mary, visited with students, teachers and parents on Dec. 7. Second, students select a topic area of interest to them and learn how to coordinate a "virtual" conversation with an expert in their interest area via webcam technology. For example, fourth grade students coordinated a web conversation with a Navy Seal stationed in Florida to learn more about dolphin training.

2. Habits of Servant Leaders: The student speakers' team at St. Mary's Grade School is made up of two students from each class grades 1-8. The students deliver an engaging, often humorous, 30-minute presentation and provide their perspectives on servant leadership as they discuss the seven habits they practice in school and life. On average, the student speakers' team delivers 6-8 presentations per year to local and statewide groups.

3. Classroom Leaders: Students elect two classroom leaders to raise issues, present ideas and otherwise represent their class in a variety of settings. For example, classroom leaders introduce and coordinate leader visits. Classroom leaders also gather as a group to plan service learning opportunities for the entire student body.

4. Leader of the Month: Each month, the faculty for grades 6-8 select a student from grades 6, 7 and 8 that they believe best exemplifies a servant leader. Students are recognized in the monthly newsletter and receive an award for their accomplishment.

5. Service Learning Opportunities: Students, faculty and parents at St. Mary's Grade School work together each fall and spring to identify a service learning opportunity they want to support. With guidance from adults, students gain a stronger understanding of what it means to follow Jesus' model as a servant to others less fortunate than ourselves.
