Leadership Program
- Program Results
What does it matter that St. Mary's Grade School has a Servant Leader program? The school currently measures program success in two ways: student enrollment and results from student surveys.
Since the Servant Leader program was launched at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year, student enrollment at St. Mary's Grade School has increased from around 185 to around 205 in the 2010-11 school year - an increase of over 10%!
Students have responded to surveys during the 2007-08 school year and the 2009-10 school year. Here are some of the results:
In 2007-08, 69 out of 70 K-4th graders were able to idenitfy the correct response for a definition of servant leadership. In grades 5-8, two thirds of the students were able to provide a narrative response that demonstrated understanding of servant leadership. Both age groups asked for more activities connected to the Servant Leader program.
In 2009-10, students of all age groups completed an electronic survey. In response to the question, "What is servant leadership," 89% selected the correct response (helping others to do the best thing).
Nearly 93% of the students said, "Yes," they would like to have the Servant Leader program continue at St. Mary's. Perhaps most revealing of all are the responses to the question, "If someone asks you how to be a servant leader, what would you tell them?"
"I would tell them that they should try to be the best person then can be even when it seems hard."
"I would tell them to show positive leadership in their daily tasks. Think of what others need, and not just what you need. Also, make good decisions and take your time thinking things through, in order to make an informed decision."
"To follow Christ and to tell others that being a servant leader doesn't mean being the boss."
